Sulfate-Free: Research & Recommendations

I'm sure if you've bought shampoo within the last year (hopefully, that's everyone!), you have noticed more and more bottles with the phrase "sulfate-free." I know I have! I'm sure some of you are wondering what that is all about. What the heck is a sulfate and why do I want my hair products to be free of it?! Well you are in luck because I have done a little research and I even have some recommendations of some sulfate-free products to try.

First, lets talk about what exactly sulfates are. Sulfates are substances put into products to cut through grease and help clean. They are also part of what causes a shampoo to create a thick, rich lather. Sulfates are known to dry hair and damage the hair follicle. Some sources state sulfates can strip hair of dye and even cause cancer. Although that is terrifying, I made the choice to switch to sulfate-free based on my hair's health. Sulfate-free shampoos are way healthier for your hair and still leave it feeling fresh and clean. Most still create a nice lather and leave hair in much better condition that those containing sulfates.

I have tried some shampoos and even one styling product that I think are all really great choices if you would like to give sulfate-free a try.

Not Your Mother's Way to Grow Long & Strong Shampoo - This shampoo is sulfate-free and good for all hair types. It is said to help your hair grow longer and faster. It also claims to strengthen hair and prevent against breakage. It has a sweet cinnamon-y scent and is really invigorating on the scalp. Another plus, Not Your Mother's products are not tested on animals! A great product and a nice brand overall.

OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo - My hair loves argan oil (it's dry and frizzy at times) so this shampoo was a no-brainer for me. The fact that it was sulfate-free only helped! This shampoo claims to moisturize and renew while protecting strands from heat and UV damage. I also have the conditioner from this line and together they do a really fantastic job. This brand is often on sale at the drugstore, be sure to grab it then!

L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care System Moisture Shampoo - This is one of the first sulfate-free products I tried and although I love the others, this is brand I will always come back to. My hair really responds well to it and it is readily available at most stores where hair products are sold. The scent is quite herbal, but that is definitely refreshing on an early morning.

L'Oreal EverCreme Sulfate-Free Moisture System Nourishing Leave-in Spray - This is one of the only styling products I have tried that is sulfate-free and it really leaves my hair feeling awesome. It's a leave-in conditioner creme but it's in spray form! Rather than having to slather creme all over my hands, this distributes throughout my hair evenly and easily. It has a nice warm, sweet smell and is really hydrating. I can really notice when I forget to use this!
